D-Day 6th June 1944. OK, I'm back
online (temporarily). For those who have been following my problems
with updating this site......here's the latest.
I have spent hours and hours
trying to find and solve the problem, and it's all down to Microsoft!
Firstly, I am writing this on Ana's laptop, which meant downloading
FileZilla and getting it to talk to Heart Internet, along with
installing Frontpage. Her computer is running Windows 11 version 23H2
whereas mine is running the later version of 24H2, and that is where the
problem lies. Microsoft issued the upgraded version of Windows 11 on
9th April without much checking of its reliability. I obviously
downloaded and installed it around that time. You have a 10 day period
of grace to roll back to the previous version, but I didn't use the
laptop after updating my site on the 2nd April and went away to Manila
for two weeks. When I realised I had a problem with my laptop, the
period of grace had expired and there is no way to roll back to the 23H2
version, and Microsoft have removed the ISO file from their website that
would allow users to copy a boot file to a flashdrive and reinstall the
older version. Trawling through the internet shows there are thousands
of dissatisfied users that are having the exact same problems as myself
with corrupted files, particularly gamers who have lost all their game
programmes. It wiped some of my banking files as well but luckily I had
back up files for those. So, there is not much I can do with my laptop
now. The plan now is to go to KK in a week or so and look for a cheap
laptop, which because it's in the shop, will not have been updated, go
into the registry files and prevent it from ever updating!
If there are no further
updates to my site for a while.........you know why!
11/06/25 Weds.
Squalls for the last week have made the weather poor, the wind is cold,
it rains frequently and nothing gets done onboard. According to the
forecast.......things are supposed to improve tomorrow!
17/06/25 Tues.
Picked up the hire car this evening, filled up with juice ready for the
morning.
18/06/25 Weds. Drove
around to Penuwasa and picked up Tom and Sheryl who were going to KK and
onward to Kuching. Headed off towards KK and had breakfast on arrival.
After dropping our passengers, we went to Karamunsing and bought another
laptop, which unfortunately has been updated to the 24H2 version.
Checked into Cititel Express.n
19/06/25 Thurs. Spent
a lot of the day configuring the laptop to my liking but the bad news is
that FrontPage has the same problem as before - when I try to open the
code page, the whole thing crashes. I am at a loss as to how I can
prevent that happening and it seems only to happen since 24H2 was
installed.
20/06/25 Fri. Drove
to TSM to get some material and Centre Point to get Ana's phone
repaired. Shopped in City Gourmet while waiting for the phone repair.
Drove back to Kudat in rain and heavy traffic and had dinner with Craig
and Josephine in the marina cafe.
22/06/25 Sun. I think
I may have found a work around for the FrontPage problem which will keep
my website going for a little while. Just have to wait and see if the
plan works! Now my next big issue is the cooker replacement. I have
found two cookers in the UK that will fit the space (with a little
alteration) but the trouble is, neither supplier will export out of UK,
so I have to devise a way to get one shipped out here.
23/06/25 Mon. I am
on the verge of giving up with this site! Now, nothing will
update, it is still showing last update as the 11th June although I have
written a little since then and spent all day trying to update the
site. ARGGHHH
24/06/25 Tues. OK, I
found yesterday's problem - this laptop has 3 different locations for
documents, one in the files, one under 'User' and another on the
desktop. Two of them were being used, my site files stored on one and
FileZilla using the other, so it couldn't upload the right ones to my
host site. I think it's sorted out now.
30/06/25 Mon. I may
have said that I'm looking for a new cooker? Anyway, after a couple of
weeks searching, I found four that will fit the available space - all
expensive and all out of stock! Furthermore, none of the suppliers, who
are mostly in UK, will ship internationally. The choice is a Dometic
Starlight, Dometic Sunlight, Voyager 4500 or Neptune 4500. Dometic are
a Swedish company but the ovens are made in several different locations.
Voyager I have discounted as it looks exactly like the Neptune under a
different name. Neptune are made in my home town of Bolton. Reviews
show pro's and con's for all, Dometic are the most expensive, have weak
gimbal brackets, questionable side insulation and no grill pan. So I'm
left with the Neptune 4500 which has received more thumbs up reviews
than thumbs down. Today, I had a message from one chandlery, telling me
they are back in stock so I tried to order one. Entered credit card
details and was passed to my bank for verification which I did with
biometrics, all good and passed back to the chandlery whose system
rejected the payment! I tried with another credit card from a different
bank with the same result. So a series of e-mails with the supplier is
now going back and forth, with the 7 hour time difference throwing
another spanner in the works.
