04/06/22 Sat. A weekend drive to KK today to make up the
five sessions this week (Monday was a holiday), that's 14 done now.
Monday is another holiday, so I don't have to go down until Tuesday.
05/06/22 Sun. I think I found a way to rectify the steering
discrepancy today, I unscrewed each of the tie rod ends on the torque
tube by a couple of turns which makes the tube slightly longer and takes
up the 'missing' degrees of rudder alignment. Hopefully the
problem is now cured without having to remove the fuel tank and transfer
gearbox!
06/06/22 Mon. Completed one of those five minute jobs that take
two days - the deck/spreader light had ceased to function and I checked
the fuse (OK), thought it might be the switch so I took off the panel
and all was good. Took off the deck plug and it fell apart!
I don't have another, so I replaced it with a deck gland. I had no
silicone for sealing, so had to go into town and buy a tube, and a new
gun to apply it, then take down the deckhead panel to get to the wiring.
Now, after two days, it's working again.
09/06/22 Thurs. Another parcel delivery problem, this time
with UPS! I ordered some rubber seals from the UK which were
supposed to be delivered on the 2nd June. On the 1st, I had an
e-mail telling me it would be delivered tomorrow - it wasn't.
Yesterday I had a second e-mail telling me it had been delivered - it
hasn't, and tracking shows it as being in KK and marked as delivered.
10/06/22 Fri. Our daily drive to KK and back wasn't too bad
(traffic wise) today - only two more sessions to go! I must admit
I am getting fed up with the same route each day! My throat is
hurting quite a bit now and it's a major problem to swallow anything.
We phoned UPS today while in KK but the number given is not in use and I
have no e-mail address for them. Shafiq in the office here cannot
contact them either, so I've mailed the supplier in UK and asked them to
chase it.
13/06/22 Mon. The last of twenty sessions of radiotherapy
at KPJ Hospital in Kota Kinabalu - that's four doses of radiation on
every visit, so 80 doses in all. My throat feels terrible now,
it's very difficult to swallow properly or to even control it.
Extra fluid, saliva or whatever is always going down the wrong 'tube'
and almost chokes me with a bout of coughing (which hurts!) The
doc says it will take a few weeks, or even months for the pain to ease
and some semblance of a voice to reappear. I'm just glad I don't
have to drive to KK anymore, we clocked 7,300 Kms in the last 4 weeks -
that's 4,536 miles.
14/06/22 Tues. The UK supplier of my seals e-mailed me late last
night and said that UPS confirm they have delivered the package to Yacht
Rhumb Do. This morning I checked with the office here and no such
parcel has been received. Someone in the chain is lying!
17/06/22 Fri. Managing to do a little work each day despite
feeling rough! Hoisted the mainsail today, removed all the old
bird nests and power washed the accumulated mould off the sail and
sailbag.
18/06/22 Sat. Nothing much has changed, my throat still
feels like I'm swallowing broken glass all the time, externally it's
very red and swollen. UPS haven't
delivered my package yet and the supplier in UK has instigated an
investigation at my request.
19/06/22 Sun. OK, my throat pain is getting serious now, I
had hardly any sleep last night as I kept waking up with a choking
sensation which starts me coughing - and that hurts a lot! Inside
feels like it's red raw and burning, I hope the feeling eases sooner
rather than later. Ana has been cleaning the hull in readiness for
a coat of polish, I should be doing it but cannot at the moment.
23/06/22 Thurs. UPS parcel saga - on the 4th of this month,
we got a call from J & T Express in KK saying they had tried to deliver
a parcel to an address in Keningau and that it was a 'bag'. I told
them I had no idea where they got my name or telephone number from but I
had never been to Keningau, nor had I ordered a bag, so the package
wasn't mine. Over the last few days, I've discovered that UPS
handed the package over to J & T for final delivery to Kudat and so I
asked the J & T office here in Kudat to get the package transferred to
Kudat from Keningau. This morning they phoned me and I went into
their office and opened the package in front of them. Inside was
my package from the UK, clearly addressed to me in Kudat, and it wasn't
a bag but the rubber seals I have been waiting for. So thanks J &
T, you're about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
28/06/22 Tues. We are getting the hull polished slowly,
each day we polish about 6 feet of hull before the sun gets up,
balancing precariously on a 45 gallon drum to do so - it's not perfect
but at least it has a coat of wax on it now (or will do in a couple more
days!) My throat is improving a little each day and I stopped
taking the pain killers this morning, so fingers crossed.
30/06/22 Thurs. The hull is polished now, I still need to
make a new lid for the fridge, varnish all the woodwork and antifoul the
bottom, and of course all the other jobs that crop up as you go along!
